We Need Tougher Laws To Combat Cyberbullying In Ghana – Mzbel

Ghanaian songstress Mzbel has voiced her distress over the growing problem of cyberbullying and the inappropriate use of social media.

In a candid discussion on Accra FM, Mzbel revealed that she has personally been a victim of online harassment and has taken legal action against bloggers and media personnel in the past, although she chose to keep these cases private due to their sensitive nature.

“I have sued media people before and taken a couple of people on, but it was not made public. They have learned their lessons and have repented. One is a journalist, and the rest are bloggers,” Mzbel shared.

Mzbel expressed concern that social media has become a platform for destructive behaviour, including character sabotage and the spread of misinformation.

Additionally, she criticized online outlets for their tendency to publish unsubstantiated stories, sacrificing journalistic integrity for clickbait.

The “Awoso Me” hitmaker advocated for greater online accountability and urged the government to implement stricter legislation to curb cyberbullying and promote a safer online environment.

“I feel like a lot of people are taking advantage of social media to do wrong things. We are abusing social media. Irrespective of the caliber of people, netizens will find a way to disrespect someone…Social media has become like a weapon,” she said.

Mzbel’s call adds to the growing concerns of cyberbullying among Ghanaian entertainers.
