A communications team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Felix Osafo-Marfo has questioned what exactly the NDC spend the country’s revenue on during its tenure, because there’s absolutely nothing they could account for.
According to him, the kind of ‘messes’ the NDC caused, and the coupling of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused this current government to spend so much.
“The mess the NDC were causing within the financial sector prior to the clean-up sector, the excess capacity charges we inherited of which we paid 17 billion cedi was caused by the NDC, COVID-19 pandemic which is an external shock, and all these caused us about 51 billion cedi as a country with no fault of government. We didn’t arrange for the excess capacity charges, or the financial sector mess and government had to use money from the country’s coffers”.
He further juxtaposed IT with the spending of government’s flagship program noting that the free SHS, planting for food and jobs among others costs 15 billion cedi.
“This tells you that the mess caused by the NDC and covid-19 had really affected our economy as a country and therefore if we have gone to the advanced economies to plead for support, what is bad about that. They keep saying we are always borrowing- of course, but have they forgotten they caused that mess”, he said.
He went further to say that “I have read an IMF report on the impact of COVID-19 on advanced economies and according to the report, even the UK, US and China couldn’t meet their indicators due to COVID-19 and in the history of UK, this is the first time their interest rate which is 0.9 % to their GDP has inflated to about 6%. That is the effect of COVID-19”.
