You’re Elected To Work, Not To Lament – Afenyo-Markin Tells Gov’t

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of attempting to shift blame for a looming power crisis onto the previous government under President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the start of the vetting of ministerial nominees in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin urged the administration to focus on solutions rather than revisiting past failures.

“It is deeply concerning to hear the new administration attempting to shift blame,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“The outgoing Akufo-Addo government, despite challenges, maintained a stable and reliable power supply. This contrasts sharply with the Mahama administration’s infamous ‘Dumsor’ era, which caused immense hardship to businesses and households.”

The Minority Leader called on the nominee for energy, if approved, to present a clear and sustainable plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply, stressing that Ghanaians expect leadership that delivers results, not excuses.

“Ghanaians deserve leadership that prioritizes tangible action over empty rhetoric, accountability over deflection, and results over excuses, especially when it comes to a stable power supply,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about the government’s perceived backtracking on campaign promises, specifically the pledges to scrap taxes such as the E-Levy and betting tax. He criticized the apparent shift toward rationalizing these taxes, describing it as a betrayal of public trust.

“Campaign promises are binding, not conditional. They form the foundation of a social contract between leaders and the electorate,” he stated.

“Any attempt to alter those commitments after assuming office undermines public trust.”

He urged the nominee for finance, if approved, to ensure these promises are fulfilled promptly and transparently.

He warned that the Minority would hold the government accountable for its commitments, calling for the President’s budget and economic policy statement to reflect these promises.

“The people of Ghana deserve a government that honours its promises fully and without hesitation,” Afenyo-Markin added.
